The Dallas Wings started off their 2018 WNBA season-opening week with wins against the Atlanta Dream and losses to the Phoenix Mercury and the Minnesota Lynx.

The Dallas Wings had very mixed results during their season-opening week. They lost to the Phoenix Mercury in their season opener which I already wrote about. You can read it here. They then won against the Atlanta Dream in their home opener. I also wrote about that game which you can read here.

This brief recap will be about the loss to the defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx and the win against the Atlanta Dream.

Dallas Wings (68) vs Minnesota Lynx (76)

  • The Dallas Wings entered this game hoping to make a statement and to test themselves against the Lynx.
  • It did not go well as the Lynx were too much for the Wings to handle.
  • The Wings could not score during the second quarter and only managed to score just four points.
  • The Wings were down at half (46-21) and could not recover from that point forward.
  • In the first meeting between Liz Cambage and Minnesota's Sylvia Fowles, Sylvia Fowles won that matchup quite easily. She finished with 23 points, 20 rebounds, and 5 steals while Liz Cambage finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
  • The Wings shot just 34.6% for the game and were outrebounded by 17 (50-33).
  • There was a chance during the fourth quarter that the Wings finally started to play better but it was too little, too late.
  • Clearly, the Wings have a ways to go before they can be considered a top team in the league.

Dallas Wings (78) vs Atlanta Dream (70)

  • The Dallas Wings and the Atlanta Dream already met in the season opener which Dallas won in blowout fashion just six days before.
  • The Dallas Wings swept the season series from the Dream.
  • It was a homecoming for both Kaela Davis as she went to Georgia Tech before transferring to South Carolina. The Dream are playing at Georgia Tech's arena due to renovations at Philips Arena
  • The Wings were slow at the start of the game but quickly picked up the pace thanks in large part to the play of Dallas's x-factor Kayla Thornton. She had 14 points and 4 rebounds and her points came at critical parts of the game.
  • Liz Cambage in the second half was better as she finished with yet another double-double (14 pts/14 rebs) and helped seal the victory.
  • Skylar Diggins-Smith's leadership in the fourth quarter was crucial in terms of Dallas winning the game and her excellent FT shooting (11/13) helped seal the deal.
  • Overall, a great win for the Dallas Wings as they look to improve from this opening week.
