The Dallas Wings kicked off their season on the road against the Phoenix Mercury.

The Dallas Wings started their season last night and lost to the Phoenix Mercury by a final score of 86 to 78. It was not as close as the final score indicates. The Wings start their season with a loss and have to regroup quickly as their home opener is on Sunday against the Atlanta Dream.

Liz Cambage's return was a success, and for the majority of the game won the matchup against Brittney Griner. She looked more patient, more polished and more WNBA seasoned then before. That is great news for the Wings moving forward.

Dallas's defense still needs work. They let Dewanna Bonner and Diana Taurasi do whatever they wanted to do. That's not going to work for future matchups against the top teams such as the Minnesota Lynx and the Los Angeles Sparks.

In watching this game, I felt that the Wings were clearly trying to make Liz Cambage a priority, which they absolutely should do, but it took out the Wings transition game. The Wings are at their best when they attack the basket and in the open floor. In catering to Liz Cambage's game, it makes it that much harder to run. They need to find a happy medium moving forward to get the best from their players.

Skylar Diggins-Smith struggled in the first half of the game and she settled in for the second half, but by the fourth quarter, the game got out of reach for the Wings. They did close the gap to 4 points, but they could not get any closer and the Mercury won comfortably.

Kaela Davis was impressive in the minutes she played on the floor. She's a player to keep an eye on moving forward. If she continues to improve, she could be competing for a spot as a starter.

Glory Johnson also started off slowly and settled into the game but she suffered what looked like a bad leg injury in the fourth quarter. The Wings need her, and hopefully, she can be good to go on Sunday.

Mixed results for the rookie Azura Stevens. She was great for a few minutes but not much more. She's going to have to show that she can play if she wants more minutes.

This is just the first game for the Dallas Wings. They have much work to do ahead but if they fix certain areas, they will get their first win of the season. They're still a very dangerous team once they get going. I would not put too much stock in this game as it was the first game of the WNBA season.
