San Antonio Spurs Trade Rumors: Possible, But Unlikely

Rumors have been flying in regards to San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard as the trade deadline approaches. But based on accounts from league sources, as well as the Spurs own history, it is doubtful that a midseason trade would occur.

Despite only having their best player for nine games so far this season, the Spurs are currently the third seed in the Western Conference. In typical Spurs fashion, the franchise is getting great production from players who were either undrafted or are supposed to be too old to play meaningful minutes. If they continue their success, they will win 50 games for the 19th consecutive season.

However, all is not perfect in San Antonio. Rumors are circulating that Kawhi Leonard is unhappy with his situation, making for some wild headlines and enticing trade possibilities. We'll take a look at different takes on the situation and see if a trade is likely to occur.

Steve Kyler reports that calls for Kawhi Leonard are being shut down

ESPN's Arian Wojnarowski reported last week that the relationship between Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs has become strained. Spurs GM RC Buford, on the other hand, adamantly denied these reports, stating that there is “no issue between the Spurs organization and Kawhi." However, sports analyst Jalen Rose soon claimed that Leonard actually wanted out of San Antonio.

The basketball world is currently knee deep in rumors surrounding Leonard and the Spurs, and with so many conflicting opinions, it's hard to discern the truth. It is undoubtedly distressing for Spurs fans to think about the 2x Defensive Player of the Year being traded since he has been toted as the franchise player since Tim Duncan's retirement.

But these fans can relax; according to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, "league sources said their calls on Leonard were shut down before they started." While this does mean other teams are attempting to trade for Leonard, it also shows that the Spurs are committed to working things out with him. This falls into line with what we expect from the Spurs organization, who are known for their stubborn loyalty to players as well as their low tolerance for drama. It appears that despite some dissonance between Leonard and the organization, they are still unwilling to deal the star player at this time.

Trade deadline drama is unlikely

So far, the only trade rumors about the Spurs that are circulating are in regards to Kawhi Leonard. This shouldn't surprise anyone, for two reasons:

First, we all know the San Antonio Spurs are not known for being the most forthcoming with information. As a general rule, they like to keep behind the scenes happenings, well, behind the scenes. If there is a trade that they are working on, it's unlikely that anyone outside the organization will know until it has already happened.

Secondly, it's pretty unlikely that the Spurs are even working on a trade in the first place. According to Real GM, San Antonio has only made five trades at the trade deadline since 1990. Basically, they make an average of one deadline deal every five years. The organization has a penchant for "homegrown" players; of their current roster, only two players were acquired by trade. These players, Kawhi Leonard and Davis Bertans, actually came to the Spurs in the same deal. San Antonio is just not big on trades, plain and simple.

Most likely, we will not see a trade go down for the black and silver at the trade deadline this year. The only player who seems openly discontent with his situation, Kawhi Leonard, appears not to be on the trade block, and the Spurs have a history of forgoing deadline deals. Unless something wild happens, expect to see San Antonio's roster still looking the same on the other side of February 8th.
