A look at Team USA's opponents in the pre-tournament phase of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

A look at Team USA's opponents in the pre-tournament phase of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

In Kevin Durant's Oracle Arena debut for his now hometown Golden State Warrior fans, Team USA dominated the Chinese squad 107-57 in exhibition play on Tuesday, July 26 as the team prepares to go for gold in Rio De Janeiro in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Even if this is considered Team USA's "B-Squad"m with players like Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James all opting to sit out to rest and recover for the upcoming NBA season (and avoiding the threat of Zika), this current squad representing the United States is still the odds-on favorite to walk home with the Olympic Gold Medal.

But, much like in northeast Ohio, nothing is given and everything is earned. Team USA still has a challenge from opposing countries in Group A.

French National Team - Ranked #5 in the World (FIBA)

Source: Rappler

Projected Depth Chart:

With the French National Team, Team USA has an opponent that has a combination of NBA talent with San Antonio Spurs player Tony Parker, Utah Jazz member Boris Diaw and Denver Nuggets big man Joffrey Lauvergne, along with many international players that call France home. The biggest scoring threat for the French National Team is shooting guard Nando De Colo, who has averaged 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.8 steals in qualifying play for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Tony Parker has been the leading assist man with 3.5 assists a game in qualifying play and also added in 13.8 points and 2.8 rebounds.

In regards to Team France, the United States should look out for a balanced attack of space and pace, much similar to Tony Parker's San Antonio Spurs as they both attack the basket and make plays in order to create an easier and more efficient shot.

This was especially evident in their qualifier finale against the Canadian National Team:

Team USA's guards Kyrie Irving and Kyle Lowry will have their hands full containing Parker, but look for Demarcus Cousins to attack Lauvergne down low since he is "the most dominant player in the world" according to Sacramento Kings general manager Vlade Divac.

Also look for Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant to feast against the combination of Diaw and Kahudi.

Team USA will play France the last day of preliminaries Sunday, August 14 at Barra Carioca at 1:15 PM EST.

Venezuelan National Team - Ranked #22 in the World (FIBA)

Source: Remezcla

Projected Depth Chart:

Venezuela employs a team that has a good balance of production in the starting lineup and off of the bench. For the starters Jose Vargas leads all scorers with 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists in only 23.7 minutes a game during Olympic qualifier play.

Along with Vargas, the starting unit for the Venezuelan team is also supported by point guard David Cubilan, who averages 10.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 22.5 minutes during Olympic qualifier play. While off the bench the leading scorer for the Venezuelan National Team is point guard Gregory Vargas with 13.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 24.5 minutes during the Olympic qualifiers. The team is also anchored defensively by Jose Vargas who averaged 1.7 steals in six games during the qualifying games.

The Venezuelan National Team's style of play focuses more on taking and making three-point shots, early in the shot clock or on the fast break, which then allows their big men to have open lanes to attack down low. Here are some highlights of Venezuela defeating Olympic host country Brazil in the FIBA South America Championship to give a better idea of their style of play:

Team USA should not have any problem with Venezuela. The fact that they are missing arguably their best player in Brooklyn Nets guard Greivis Vásquez puts a serious damper on their scoring and ball movement, so they have to rely more on shooting tons of three-point shots and making them in order to succeed. Team USA's length, size and defensive ability will put a quick lock on that and should help secure a win against Venezuela.

Team USA got a better look at Venezuela on Friday, July 29, and came out victorious 85-45. Early on Venezuela was able to hang tough with Team USA due to the fact the American squad came out ice cold, but The United States eventually righted the course and were led in scoring by Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, who both scored 13 points.

Here are some highlights from the Team USA game against Venezuela:

Serbian National Team - Ranked #6 in the World (FIBA)

Source: NBC Sports

Projected Depth Chart:

Along with France and Australia, Serbia is one of the biggest threats of upsetting Team USA's quest for gold with a very talented roster headlined by Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic. Jokic is one of the leading scorers for the Serbian National Team with 17.8 points during Olympic qualifying play and also has added in 7.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

Bogdan Bogdanovic is the other leading scorer for Serbia with 17.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists. Spearheaded by these two players, Serbia has solid production down low and also from the perimeter to create problems for teams in Group A.

Serbia's style of play falls in-line with Jokic and Bogdanovic, focusing on of three-point and paint opportunities, with plenty of spacing.

Here is a quick highlight reel of Serbia against Angola in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament:

Instead of France or even Australia, Serbia poses the biggest threat for Team USA in Group A.

Demarcus Cousins and Deandre Jordan will have their hands full with Jokic, who is an up and coming star in the NBA. And on the opposite end of the spectrum players like Kevin Durant, Paul George and Carmelo Anthony will have to lock in defensively against Bogdanovic in order to help Team USA defeat Serbia. Look for players like Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler to have s strong outing against Serbia since their guards appear to be their biggest weakness for them. The United States should win against Serbia, but it will not be an easy match.

Team USA will play the Serbian National Team in the preliminary round Friday, August 12 at Barra Carioca at 6:00 PM EST.

Chinese National Basketball Team - Ranked #14 in the World (FIBA)

Source: FIBA

Projected Depth Chart:

The fourth member of Group A for the 2016 Summer Olympics is the Chinese National Team. The most known name by American basketball fans on this roster is Yi Jianlian, the former Milwaukee Bucks draft pick that was famously known for being Michael Jordan against chairs.

The other known name is Zhou Qi, the 2016 second round draft pick for the Houston Rockets. The Chinese National Team is a strong force in the Asian basketball league, with most considering it to be the powerhouse of that region.

Despite being a powerhouse, the Chinese National Team poses next to no threat to the United States as shown in both scrimmages against the two squads in pre-Olympic play. In the first game Team USA routed the Chinese National Team 106-57, with Kevin Durant leading all scorers with 19 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists. In the second game there was almost the exact same outcome with Team USA winning 107-57. This time around it was Demarcus Cousins who shredded the Chinese defense with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony was right behind him off the bench with 20 points and 5 rebounds as well.

Here are highlights from both games:

Australian National Team - Ranked #11 in the World (FIBA)

Source: PAC 12

Projected Depth Chart:

Rounding out the last opponent for Team USA is the Australian National Team. Australia has recently been churning out NBA-caliber talent with players like Utah Jazz point-giard Dante Exum and Philadelphia 76ers Ben Simmons, who was the first overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. They also have NBA talent on the roster with San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills, Milwaukee Bucks guard Matthew Dellavedova, Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut, Utah Jazz forward Joe Ingles and Detroit Pistons players Aron Baynes and Cameron Bairstow.

With this much NBA talent, the Australian team is one of the serious threats to Team USA in Group A.

Australia's style of play is extremely reminiscent of what Patty Mills would run in Gregg Popovich's system in San Antonio, with crisp passes and terrific ball movement to help attack the basket and create three-point opportunities. To get a better idea of how Australia plays, here is a quick highlight video showcasing their ability against the PAC 12 All-Stars in Melbourne a few weeks ago:

Look for Team USA to really exploit the small forward mismatch against Joe Ingles with Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony.

Team USA will play the Australian National Team in day three of preliminaries on Wednesday, August 10, at Barra Carioca at 6:00 PM.

Even though Team USA received the luck of the draw in avoiding Spain (Ranked #2, FIBA), Lithuania (Ranked #3, FIBA) and Argentina (Ranked #4, FIBA), by being placed in Group A they still have quality opponents in France, Serbia and Australia.

Teams like China and Venezuela should not be underestimated as well. Despite the fact that they are the odds-on favorite to take home the gold medal in Rio, they still have a challenging road ahead in the preliminary games and should focus on that instead of the gold medal game on August 21.
