NBA Draft 2022: Quick Dynasty Rookie Rankings and Trade Implications for Fantasy Basketball

A fantasy basketball recap of the 2022 NBA Draft.

A fantasy basketball recap of the 2022 NBA Draft.

It's my birthday today, so I'll try to write this up quickly and add the rookies to my dynasty rankings (which I've finally started updating again) by the end of the weekend.

My top 14 rookie rankings for dynasty drafts

This order will likely change as we get a better idea of team fit and role, but here's how my top 14 rookies sit so far:

Tier 1:

1. Chet Holmgren (Oklahoma City Thunder): Bigs take time to develop, but he can potentially be an elite fantasy contributor.

Tier 2:

2. Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic): Flip a coin on who you'd take at 2. I'm leaning towards Paolo because he has cleaner shooting percentages from the field in college.

3. Jabari Smith (Houston Rockets)

Tier 3:

4. Jaden Ivey (Detroit Pistons)

5. Keegan Murray (Sacramento Kings)

Tier 4:

6. Shaedon Sharpe (Portland Trail Blazers): Portland is back to wanting to win games again this season, so I'm not sure how much we'll be seeing of Sharpe this season, but he has legit scoring potential.

7. Jalen Duren (Detroit Pistons): If Detroit doesn't go after a C in free agency, I wouldn't be shocked to see him starting as early as this season.

8. Mark Williams (Charlotte Hornets): Reliant on Charlotte admitting Plumlee is no longer the play at C.

Tier 5:

9. Dyson Daniels (New Orlean Pelicans): A defensive stud, but his shooting needs work.

10. Bennedict Mathurin (Indiana Pacers)

Tier 6:

11. Jeremy Sochan (San Antonio Spurs)

12. A.J. Griffin (Atlanta Hawks): Has huge upside, but needs time to develop.

Tier 7:

13. Jake LaRavia (Memphis Grizzlies)

14. Johnny Davis (Washington Wizards)

De'Anthony Melton traded to Philadelphia

Everybody's favourite fantasy darling got traded from a team where he was a productive bench player, to a team where he'll be a productive bench player.

You might be disappointed if you think Maxey, Melton, and Harden will be starting together. Both Maxey and Melton are 6'2, and Harden is lazy when he doesn't have the ball in his hands.

According to Basketball-Reference, Melton played 3% of his minutes last season at SF. So while we'll likely see 3-guard lineups, it wouldn't be something I'd be banking on seeing for 30 minutes a night.

Knicks free up cap space by trading Kemba Walker

The biggest impact Kemba moving from the Knicks will have on the roster is the cap space it frees up for them to make an offer to a free agent.

They're reportedly interested in Jalen Brunson, who had a usage rate of 22.1% last season, so that will have a flow-on impact on guys like Randle, who like to have the ball in their hands.

Can the thin towers become a thing?

Chet has taken some of the thunder away from Pokusevski, who is either the most over-rated or under-rated dynasty prospect in fantasy basketball, depending on who you're talking to.

OKC has, and will put out some funky lineups, and it'll be super fun to watch them play together, but with so many young guys who can play PF, I'm not sure how much of Poku we'll be seeing in the starting lineup, who has to date started in 40 of his 106 games.
