Sacramento Kings

The Monday night match-up in Washington, D.C., will provide yet another excuse to indulge in the "DeMarcus Cousins to the Wizards" discussions. It is no secret that Boogie (aka Cousins) and John Wall have been great friends ever since playing together at the University of Kentucky, and, with the Wizards off to a rocky start, Ernie Grunfeld might want to pick up the phone and dial a few numbers starting with 916 just to explore the options.

Sacramento has been surprisingly good offensively this season, scoring 108.3 points per 100 possessions (10th in the NBA), and unsurprisingly poor defensively, allowing 110.2 (27th). Cousins is averaging 28.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and an astounding 40.8 percent from three. Wizards fans will recognize a familiar face on the Kings roster in Garrett Temple, a former Washington player (2012-2016). Temple signed with Sacramento during the off-season, and he’s now averaging 5.8 points in 20.8 minutes per game.

Oklahoma City Thunder

In their first game of the season west of the Mississippi River, the Wizards are entering a notoriously hostile environment in Oklahoma City. The Russell Westbrook-led team likes to push the tempo – they rank sixth in the league in this category – which also leads to a high turnover rate, as they lose the ball 13.8 times per 100 possessions, sixth worst in the NBA.

Westbrook’s play has been nothing short of spectacular. He averages 31.2 points, 11.2 assists, and 9.9 rebounds per game. Victor Oladipo, the Oklahoma City’s second-best scorer, averages 17.3 points per game on 46.4 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from deep, both career-highs. The Thunder also rebound well, allowing only 104.6 points per 100 possessions (eighth in the league).

San Antonio Spurs

Following the 100-112 home loss to the Spurs only a few days ago, the Wizards will try to get their first win in San Antonio since 1999. That’s right, 1999. In that victorious game, Washington's starting lineup consisted of Mitch Richmond, Michael Smith, Rod Strickland, Isaac Austin and Juwan Howard, while the Spurs were represented by Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Avery Johnson, Mario Elie and Chucky Brown.

In the November 26, 2016 game, the Spurs shot 53.3 percent from the field and got to the free-throw line 29 times, converting 23 of their attempts. Despite a below-average performance by Kawhi Leonard (19 points on 5/14 shooting), the Spurs secured another win through the efforts of LaMarcus Aldridge (24 points, 9/17) and Tony Parker (20 points, 8/13). The contributions of the Wizards bench – outscored 18 to 35 in the previous encounter – will be necessary to keep this game competitive.
