The Raptors and Dwane Casey are parting ways after the team's best regular season in franchise history.

The Toronto Raptors have fired head coach Dwane Casey on Friday after leading the team to their best regular season record in franchise history, Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

Casey was informed Friday morning, the news coming just two days after Casey was named Coach of the Year by the National Basketball Coaches Associaton.

He spearheaded a modernization effort in the team's playing style that greatly contributed to their 59 regular season wins and securing the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Despite their regular season success, the team was swept in the second-round of the playoffs by LeBron's Cleveland Cavaliers, making it the second time in a row that LeBron has knocked Toronto out of championship contention.

Under Casey's watch, the Raptors improved in six of the seven seasons he coached. He leaves Toronto as the team's most successful coach boasting an overall record of 320 wins to 238 losses. He also led the Raps to the postseason every year for the last five years.

"After careful consideration, I have decided this is a very difficult but necessary step the franchise must take," said Masai Ujiri. "We celebrate everything Dwane has done for the organization, we thank him, and we wish him nothing but the best in future. He was instrumental in creating the identity and culture of who we are as a team, and we are so proud of that."

Support for Casey has poured out from the team and from the NBA community at large.

"Case is one of the best coaches I've ever had," remarked Kyle Lowry. "We didn't always see eye to eye, but he let me be me. He was huge for my growth as a man and an NBA player."

"Dwane is as good of a person as they come," said coach Brad Stevens of the Boston Celtics. "It's disappointing from the standpoint of the coaching profession, but, you know, as far as another coach looking at what he was able to accomplish, I think he's a role model for a lot of coaches."

Stevens also said that Casey's dismissal doesn't take away from what he's accomplished. He, along with many others, expect Casey to become an immediate contender for available coaching jobs in the league.

Ujiri has yet to indicate Casey's replacement.

In a Friday afternoon press-conference, Ujiri stated that he doesn't have an extensive list of prospective coaches for the position, though he and his team intend to conduct thorough reviews of all potential options.
