Kyle Lowry Named an All-Star Reserve

Kyle Lowry has been added to the 2018 NBA All-Star game as a reserve.

Kyle Lowry has been added to the 2018 NBA All-Star game as a reserve.

Kyle Lowry will join fellow Raptor DeMar DeRozan in Los Angeles as the pair get set to participate in the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

News that Lowry had been named a reserve by the league's coaches broke on Tuesday night, along with the fact that rival guards John Wall and Bradley Beal would be joining him. The players listed below flesh out the 2018 All-Star reserves selected from the Eastern Conference.

  • Victor Oladipo, G
  • Kevin Love, F
  • Kristaps Porzingis, F
  • Al Horford, F

This will be Lowry's fourth straight All-Star selection, despite this season being his worst scoring year in the past four years.

While he's only averaging 17 points per game, he's doing it very efficiently. He's also averaging close to seven assists and six rebounds per game.

It's tough to argue that Lowry was selected as an All-Star based on his numbers alone. Heck, Ben Simmons is putting up comparable numbers in his rookie year, is arguably more exciting to watch, yet he was snubbed from the All-Star Game.

A more compelling argument is that Lowry's made himself indispensable to the Toronto Raptors, who are currently second-place in the Eastern Conference. They boast a 31 and 14 record and are closer to overtaking the Boston Celtics for first than they are to dropping behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for third.

It probably also helps that Lowry went off for 40 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves just a few days ago.

Lowry turned to Instagram and Twitter after he heard the news to thank his teammates for their support saying he wouldn't be an All-Star without them.

In an interview with Doug Smith, Lowry said being chosen as an All-Star "means a lot," adding that "this is more of a team thing than an individual thing. All of my teammates are as big a part of this as me."

This year the All-Star Game will diverge from the standard East-West format in that teams will be selected by captains in a draft meaning that Lowry and DeRozan could actually play against each other. Guys will have extra incentive to play hard to validate their draft stock and teams will actually want to win as they'll be playing on behalf of preselected charities.

The All-star weekend will take place between February 16th and February 18th and the All-Star Game will fall on the 18th.
