Fake News: DeMarre Carroll Has Been a Star for the Brooklyn Nets
DeMarre Carroll isn't the same player he was with the Atlanta Hawks.
DeMarre Carroll isn't the same player he was with the Atlanta Hawks.
DeMarre Carroll had a good October as a member of the Brooklyn Nets. In those seven games, he shot 42% from three. DeMarre has also been more active on the glass this season. Enough nice stuff. Let the roasting begin.
Carroll’s Comments
Before anything can be said negatively about DeMarre Carroll we must start with some things he said this summer after the Raptors traded him.
“I wasn’t surprised because I knew it was a lot of things going on last year that didn’t come out.”
“This year, I feel like a lot of guys didn’t trust each other, and a lot of guys, they didn’t feel like other guys could produce or given the opportunity. There was a lot of lack of trust on our team, so that’s what hindered us from going.”
These comments seem like Carroll was trying to throw some shade on the Raptors locker room. Even if what he said is true is something that shouldn’t be said. It’s hard to know what DeMarre was trying to accomplish with these quotes. Maybe he was just bitter because he was traded as a toxic asset. It cannot feel good to know you aren’t wanted and a team has to give up picks to give rid of you.
Trust The System
It makes sense that DeMarre Carroll didn’t play well in the Raptors system. His career year came with the Atlanta Hawks who had one of the best passing offenses in the league. At the time, the Raptors were pretty poor at moving the ball. So it makes sense that Carroll’s offensive production would decline playing with the Raptors, but to assume his shot would come back playing with the Nets was nonsense. Carroll wasn’t very good before playing with those four all-stars the Hawks had and he’s not very good now. DeMarre should be praised for working his tail off to make and stay in the NBA, but now it would seem his career could be coming to a close.

The Injuries
DeMarre Carroll cannot stay healthy. It looks like maybe his body has turned on him. Carroll cannot play in back-to-backs or hold up over the course of an NBA season. Last season with the Raptors post all-star break DeMarre only shot a shameful 36% from the field and 30% from three. You see his declining even starting earlier this season with the Nets. Carroll’s three-point percentage fell roughly 6% in the month of November and in December his shooting totally fell off a cliff. In fact, in December DeMarre only shot 35% from the field and under 30% from three. His shooting hasn’t returned to form in the three games he played in January prior to getting injured.
Role & Rebounding
When DeMarre Carroll actually does play he’s more involved than what he was with the Raptors. That might not necessarily be a good thing because of his poor shooting. However, Carroll has been racking up more rebounds this year. The Nets have used him at power forward a little more than the Raptors did so that could explain the increase in rebounds. Some people thought that Carroll could be the LeBron stopper for the Raptors. That never happened. However, OG Anunoby might just be that guy for the Raptors this year. OG was able to lock up James Harden this season and stop Giannis Antetokounmpo from having monster games. It’s probably unlikely Anunoby will be able to fully stop LeBron James, but there is a chance he could slow him down which is something DeMarre Carroll could only dream of.
DeMarre Carroll has continued to struggle in the Nets system this season, but he will be able to retire comfortably because of the big contract the Raptors gave him two years ago.
