The Spurs agreed to sign Michigan State Alum Matt Costello to a two-way on Thursday.

Thursday was a historic day for the San Antonio Spurs. For the first time in franchise history, they agreed to sign a player to a two-way deal. After an impressive performance in the Las Vegas Summer League, Matt Costello and the Spurs came to an agreement on a two-way contract. The former Michigan State alum has bounced around since coming into the league. He has spent a bulk of his time in the G-League playing for the Iowa Energy.

For those of you unfamiliar with what a two-way deal is it is essentially a way to ensure that you control a certain player while they are in the G-League. A player is eligible to play in the NBA under the league minimum for 45 days, while the remainder must be spent in the G-League. This new method is going to be very useful and cost effective for teams and will give more and more players opportunities. The players that are signed to these type of deals do not count towards the salary cap, and when their time is done with their respective teams, will become a restricted free agent.

Costello, a 6'9 forward, did enough to impress the Spurs while playing with Minnesota's team in the Summer League. He was a rebounding machine, averaging 12.0 rebounds per game, which was the highest out of any other player. To go along with the rebounds, Costello also averaged 11.3 points per game and shot 60 percent from the field. Even though the former Spartan only played in four games throughout his time in the Summer League, for an undersized forward, he was a handful for opponents.

It's pretty unclear how Costello's career will turn out. However, the Spurs have yet to add a lot of front court depth that they have become accustomed to in the past. Who knows what will happen, but Costello will have his chance.
