The reveal of the Spurs' brand new 'City Edition' Jerseys received mixed reviews from fans who were hoping for something a bit more colorful.

Back in June of 2015, it was announced that Nike would be taking the reigns from Adidas as the leagues uniform and apparel provider beginning the 2017-2018 season. Fast forward 2 years to this past July where the NBA revealed the first of four different jerseys that each NBA team would be using this season, the Association Edition. While there was a lot of attention around that jersey, the majority of the buzz was around the jersey that would be "inspired by the team's community", which would later be named the City Edition jersey.

Once it was revealed that these City Edition jersey designs, which would need to be signed off on by the team's players and coaches, would be designed based on the team's communities and fans, fans on social media started going off about just what the Spurs would be coming up with. By far, most fans were hopeful that the Spurs would somehow be incorporating their Fiesta colors of old into these new jerseys. While previous Spurs jerseys never had the orange, pink, and teal colorway on them, those colors were prominently featured on the court back when the Spurs still played in the Alamodome, along with their apparel and warmup suits. Fans were eager to see exactly what Nike and the Spurs would release.

Fans got their first glimpse of the new City Edition jersey thanks to an accidental leak by the NBA 2K18 video game on December 14th.

A blurry, screen captured image showing a black and silver camo design. With no official confirmation from Nike, fans did not give it too much attention. Thirteen days later on December 27th, Nike made their official announcement revealing all City Edition jersey designs. The leaked image was, in fact, the design the Spurs had chosen to go with, and it was met with mixed reviews both positive and negative. Go take a look at the replies to the Spurs official tweet to see for yourself.

Nicknamed, Military City USA, it's a no-brainer where the idea for this design came from. While it is great for the Spurs to pay homage to all the service men and women who reside in San Antonio, most people felt that maybe that isn't the best representation of San Antonio's culture. Most believed that the beloved Fiesta colors that represented the Hispanic culture throughout the city would have been a better option.

The Spurs are known to do a lot for the service men and women throughout the city, and for as long as I can remember, hold multiple "Salute Night" games throughout the season. These games are held to show appreciation to those who have served or are currently serving. Prior to Nike taking over, the Spurs had special Military Night camo jerseys designed by Adidas that they would wear on these nights. If I had to take a guess, the team figured they would take advantage of these City Edition jerseys to ensure they would continue to have a special jersey to wear during these military nights to show support for the service men and women in attendance and watching around the country/world.

While I personally like the jersey design, I also would have liked to see the Fiesta colorway incorporated somehow. Spurs fans should not worry too much though, while these City Edition jerseys will be worn throughout the remainder of this season, Nike will be creating some new ones for the 2018-2019 season. There is still hope that we may see those vintage colors soon. The Spurs will be debuting their new threads on Friday, January 26th when they face off against the Philadelphia 76ers on, you guessed it, USAA Salute Night.

So what do you think about these new City Edition jerseys? Are people overreacting about the design? Should the Spurs have gone with the Fiesta colors instead?
