Who is Amanda Zahui B?

Amanda Zahui B (pronounced “Zah-wee bee”)  is in her fourth season in the WNBA. She was drafted second overall by the Tulsa Shock (now the Dallas Wings) in 2015.

Zahui B was traded to the New York Liberty in 2016, shortly after the Shock moved to Dallas and were renamed the Wings. She wears #17.

Zahui B was born in Stockholm, Sweden and came to the United States for college on a basketball scholarship to the University of Minnesota. She entered the 2015 draft after her athletic sophomore year in college (she was a redshirt her freshman year, so she was an academic junior when she left Minnesota). In the offseason, Zahui B plays in Russia for USK Praha.

She also plays for the Swedish national team.

You can follow her on Twitter and Instagram.

Fun fact: her full last name is actually Zahui Bazoukou (her father is from the Ivory Coast in West Africa), but she shortened it to Zahui B so that it would fit on her uniform jersey and be easier for Americans to pronounce. However, she uses the surname Bazoukou on her jerseys when she players overseas in Russia because “Zahui” has an obscene connotation in the Russian language.

What is her playing position?

Zahui B is formally listed as a 6’5” center. She can also play the power forward (number 4) position.

Why should she be an All-Star?

Zahui B averages 32% from three-point range and has a 50.6% field goal percentage, which is currently the highest on the Liberty team. She provides a nice defensive boost off the bench and has emerged as a dependable backup to Liberty pillar Tina Charles. Still, statistics don't tell the whole story. Zahui B is a disruptive presence on the floor even when she's not scoring and is becoming one of the emotional leaders of the team.

Off the court, Zahui B is an avid supporter of breast cancer research (her mother is a survivor) and has a goal of starting a recreation center for teens, in order to create a safe space for them.
