Las Vegas Aces vs. Indiana Fever 06-12-18 (Aces won in OT, 101-92)

Say I'm Your Number One

Las Vegas Aces A’Ja Wilson continued to prove why she was the number 1 overall pick of the 2018 draft. Despite some rare misses at the free-throw line and at the rim, Wilson went off for a career-high 35 points. She added 13 rebounds. Wilson is the second rookie ever in WNBA history to score 35 points. The other? Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Apparently, Wilson also joins elite company in Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx) and Cappie Pondexter (Sparks) as the rookie with the third-most points through her first nine career games.

It Takes a Village

Despite Wilson’s stellar scoring night, it took a team effort by the Aces to overcome Indiana’s quick hands and clutch plays. Kayla McBride, even with a slow start, was a factor with 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists. Tamera Young chipped in 11 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, and 2 steals. Dearica Hamby also had 11 points to go with her 6 rebounds. Kelsey Bone had 8 points and 3 rebounds on 4/4 shooting. Together, they held the Fever’s star rookie, Kelsey Mitchell, to just 17 points and only four made 3-pointers. Teamwork makes the dream work!

The Closer

Las Vegas has struggled to close out games, hence their 2-7 record. Maybe it was something about being in overtime, or maybe head coach Bill Laimbeer’s defensive teachings are sinking in a bit more, or maybe the thought of losing to the league’s worst team hurt too much to contemplate. Either way, the Aces locked in and locked down in overtime, and kept the Fever to only 8 points.

Bakery Blues

The Aces had 13 turnovers for the entire game. It’s better than their 16-TO average per game, the league’s highest, but that figure still needs to get lower if they want to get better control of games.

Feeling Charitable

The Aces were 18-26 from the free throw line. The Fever were only 14-16.

Can the Aces ride their momentum into a matchup against a struggling yet talented New York team -- one that will see the return of franchise favorite Epiphanny Prince? This game will pit Wilson against yet another first-round pick (Kia Nurse of the Liberty) who is having an excellent rookie season as well. Nurse came off the bench and dropped 34 points on June 2 against the Fever for a career high.
