Rumor: Travis Schlenk to Become GM of Atlanta Hawks

Sources are reporting Golden State Warriors Travis Schlenk will fill Hawks' vacant GM position.

Sources are reporting Golden State Warriors Travis Schlenk will fill Hawks' vacant GM position.

Multiple outlets are reporting that an executive for the Golden State Warriors, Travis Schlenk, will become the general manager for the Atlanta Hawks. The position was previously filled by executive Wes Wilcox. Head coach Mike Budenholzer has also stepped down as President of Basketball Operations. Budenholzer will now focus solely on coaching and Wilcox will be taking on a special adviser role to Hawks' ownership.

Hawks' former GM and special adviser Rick Sund is primarily handling draft preparations for now.

Golden State is best known as the super team that lured Kevin Durant to join them last offseason. They've earned a reputation for being a free agent hot spot, but Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson were all drafted by the Warriors. Schlenk has worked in several capacities for Golden State since 2004, including assistant GM and director of player personnel. They have made the Finals for three straight seasons and won the championship in 2015. They are the heavy favorites to win another championship this summer.

He was the assistant GM and director of player personnel when current Hawk Kent Bazemore was drafted.

The new Hawks' GM will have a lot on his plate. The Hawks have piled up more than 10 draft picks through the next three years. They also have huge decisions to make on free agents Paul Millsap and Tim Hardaway, Jr. Each will command hefty salaries that could limit the team's flexibility for the coming seasons.

Schlenk is no stranger to Georgia. He served as Director of Basketball Operations for the University of Georgia for the 1998-1999 season. The Bulldawgs finished with a 15-15 record that season. He also served as a video coordinator for the Miami Heat for four years.

The deal to make him the Hawks GM should be completed before the end of the week. Many others were considered for this role, including a team comprising of former NBA greats Chauncey Billups and Brent Barry.
